TGIF! It’s the end of the week and the weekend is slowly approaching. If you’ve got plans, then having a bad hair day is not in the agenda. This got me thinking about my past experiences and how I often jump from one hairdresser or salon to another. So, with that being said, I will proudly admit that one of most difficult things for me is choosing a hairdresser. I often feel guilty if I don’t go in as often, so once it’s been awhile I usually try to find some other salon to go to start “fresh.”
Don’t make the same mistakes as me! Instead, try sticking to one specific hair salon so that you can gain a fabulous relationship with a hairdresser that will know what you like and want. I know… I already hear the groans because this is easier said than done, but hopefully what I have to say will help you in your quest of choosing the right hairdresser for you!
- Evaluate what is important to you
Before doing anything, it may help to write out a list of qualities you desire in a salon or a hairdresser. Perhaps a sense of humor within a hairdresser is a quality you want or a salon that gives back to the community through outreaches and events. Whatever the case, by figuring out what your exact wants and needs are before you start searching, you are saving yourself time and money. - Do some research
Look around you. How many women do you know? Probably a lot, right? Start asking for recommendations and opinions. If you have one friend that has an amazing hairstyle or cut, ask her what salon she goes to. This is honestly one of the most effective measures you can take when trying to choose the right hairdresser for you because your friends and family will give you the raw truth. And of course, check out the salon reviews here! With that being said, it’s still important to see for yourself if a salon or hairdresser is a right fit for you. You can’t always take the advice from others, but it sure does help. - Pick a salon & schedule a consultation
My city (Indianapolis) is full of salons, so I can understand the frustration of choosing one. Take what your friends or family members told you and go from there. Once you have selected a salon, my best advice is to visit the salon. By doing so, you can see what kind of atmosphere exists, how the hairdressers look and the overall design of the salon. Ask to speak to a manager and explain that you are interested in scheduling a consultation. Tell the manager what type of hair styles interest you and if you will need regular maintenance. The manager of the salon should be able to pair you with a hairdresser that is able to meet your needs and wants.
As a woman, I know how important hair is. It can totally transform an outfit or dictate whether or not you will have a good day (ha-ha). Treat your hair right by choosing a hairdresser that will listen to your wants and needs. The relationship between a woman and a hairdresser is often one of the most intimate bonds a woman will ever have simply because hairdressers listen to your complaints, what your plans are and how your overall day went. Start your search today and you could potentially find your next best friend!

That is some great tips Katie! Finding a truly good hair stylists that can understand what you want done and be able to recommend new hairstyles for you is really tough!
Well, a lot of women go to super expensive salons where hairdressers also massage you after they cut your hair and just because they pay a lot they think they get the best. In my opinion, if you want a massage, you should go to the spa.
